How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Windows are vital to your home’s beauty and comfort; they give you a wonderful view of outside, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your home. Because they are so important to a home, they go through a lot of action. It’s important to keep your windows clean so that continue to enhance your home.

Window glass can get dirty pretty quickly, particularly with little hands or pets in the home, but lucky for you glass cleaning is pretty simple. Many Pella Windows & Doors - Kelowna windows have easy-clean features that also make it painless to clean the exterior of your windows from the inside of your house, too. Looking for a simple, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows & Doors - Kelowna recommends:

  1. You can start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that gathers on the sill and ledges will get stuck there for a long time otherwise, and doing this first will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Make sure not to use the same cleaning duster that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment on the side of your window screen that faces in. You can also use this vacuum piece to suck up any leftover dirt and dust on your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your glass. You can blend your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Apply your cleaner generously to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from several different directions for the best clean.
  4. Let your windows air dry after cleaning and then rinse your glass with clean water if there are any streaks left.

We’ve got a few more tips, too! We suggest that you clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution quicker and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows & Doors - Kelowna professionals favor microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your beautiful view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean all year long.
